Since the 2020 Open Science Conference, GEO BON and UN System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) have been working together in cross-walking the Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) and the Essential Ecosystem Services Variables (EESV) frameworks with the SEEA Experimental Ecosystem Accounting (EEA). The SEEA is a United Nations hosted statistical system that brings together economic and environmental information into a common framework to measure the condition of the environment, the contribution of the environment to the economy and the impact of the economy on the environment. Through this collaboration, and with increasing EBV and EESV products in the EBV data portal, it is envisaged that the latest spatiotemporal analyses ready data on biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystem services are made available to the SEEA EEA for potential use by the national statistics offices and global initiatives such as the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, Multilateral Environmental Agreements, and Sustainable Development Goals. We strongly encourage the GEO BON community to make their EBV and EESV products available on the EBV data portal to actively support conservation in post-2020.
