Japan Biodiversity Observation Network (JBON) was originally established in 2009 as a network in Japan for promoting observations of biodiversity and ecosystems. They organized collaborative research projects on biodiversity observations at genetic, species, and ecosystem scales by multidisciplinary methods, and held workshops from 2009 to 2014 to share information and strengthen collaboration. In April 2023, JBON was activated, and started to promote activities such as fostering biodiversity observation, data sharing, and development of observation capabilities, with the aim of realizing a society living in harmony with nature.

Key objectives
1. To advance networks of stakeholders of biodiversity and ecosystem observations
We aim to contribute to the development and strengthening of biodiversity observation in Japan by building a system in which entities conducting ecosystem and biodiversity observations can communicate with each other, and through mutual support to continue observations.
2. To foster sharing and utilizing information and knowledge on biodiversity and ecosystem
Regarding observation data on ecosystems and biodiversity, we aim to promote the creation of open data, and promote the effective use of information. The promotion of collaboration between entities conducting observations and entities utilizing data, such as ecosystem management practitioners and data science researchers is also key to JBON.
3. To broaden international cooperation
We aim to cooperate with the Asia-Pacific BON (APBON), GEO BON members, and contribute to the development of biodiversity observation and biodiversity conservation in Asia-Pacific region and the world.
Observations
JBON fosters biodiversity observation at national scales by convening citizen science on natural history, advancement of academic research by applying multidisciplinary methodologies, and networking organizations or programs. Networks of observers will be established with a wide range of actors, including government agencies, existing researcher networks of such as Japan Long-Term Ecological Research Network (JaLTER) and Japan Ocean Biodiversity Information System (J-OBIS), museums and citizen scientists.
Data, knowledge and information sharing
Given the increasing number and diversity of actors using biodiversity information, we promote open data and its utilization, and discuss the infrastructure and rules for data management and utilization with a wide range of actors. The data management and utilization policies will be discussed in cooperation with existing organizations responsible for data integration, such as JBIF and Data Integration and Analysis System (DIAS).
Capacity building
JBON fosters national capacity building of the observations and knowledge on biodiversity through workshops for citizens and students at national and local museums, outreach at academic societies such as the Ecological Society of Japan.
International cooperation
JBON cooperates with APBON and GEO BON to share their data and knowledge on the status and changes in biodiversity and ecosystem services in Japan, through delivering information by participating APBON annual workshop and bi-monthly webinars and GEO BON Global Conference.
