A new opinion article, Predicting the way forward for the Global Biodiversity Framework, published in PNAS, calls for a transformative shift in how the world monitors and manages biodiversity change. Members of the EcoCode group argue that the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) must move beyond retrospective reporting and embrace predictive ecology as the foundation for adaptive, forward-looking decision-making.
The success of the GBF will depend not only on tracking biodiversity loss but on anticipating it. To achieve this, the authors propose establishing a World Biodiversity Research Programme (WBRP) – a coordinated global effort to advance biodiversity modelling, data integration, and equitable access to predictive tools.
