The Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Indicators, convened by the CBD, finalized its mandate. The overall purpose of this AHTEG was to provide advice to enable Parties to finalize the monitoring framework for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at COP 16 in Cali, Colombia.

 Activities of the AHTEG included:

  • Review comments made in the online forum provided by the CBD to discuss the monitoring framework
  • Guide the finalization of metadata for headline indicators
  • Finalize the metadata and aggregation methods for the binary indicators
  • Conduct a review of the glossary of key terms
  • Consider the types of disaggregations to be included in the national reporting templates
  • Consider overarching issues with the implementation of the monitoring framework for the KMGBF, particularly section C
  • Evaluate approaches for the monitoring of ecosystems across the framework for the KMGBF
  • Conduct a gap analysis and review of component and complementary indicators
  • Consider ways to fill temporal and spatial data gaps and gaps in capacity

The co-chairs of the AHTEG, Maria Cecilia Londoño (Colombia) and James Williams (UK), guided the completion of this enormous task. The recommendations of the group have been compiled in several documents that will now be considered by Parties to the CBD at SBSTTA 26 this May in Nairobi.

 AHTEG recommendation documents include:

  • CBD/SBSTTA/26/2: Monitoring framework for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
  • CBD/SBSTTA/26/2/Add.1: Advice from the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Indicators for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework on the wording of the binary questions in the monitoring framework
  • CBD/SBSTTA/26/INF/14: Guidance on using the indicators of the monitoring framework of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
  • CBD/SBSTTA/26/INF/19*: Summary of advice on the existing capacity, gaps and needs related to the monitoring of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

*To be made available (https://www.cbd.int/meetings/SBSTTA-26)

In order to disseminate the information contained in these documents, the Secretariat of the CBD has organized a webinar series (9 April to 7 May) on the outcomes and process of this work, including information webinars on several indicators. GEO BON has contributed to three webinars in this series.

Please consult the webinar page for full details and recordings as they become available.
